Mountain Leader Summer Assessment

The Mountain Leader assessment is a 5 day course that assesses candidates in the skills required to lead hillwalking groups in summer conditions on mountainous routes not requiring the planned use of a rope. Established in 1964, this was the first qualification created by Mountain Training.

The course takes place in the South Lakeland fells based from Ghyll Head Outdoor Education Centre, Windermere, in its stunning setting. The five-day assessment, will evaluate your navigation proficiency, group management and decision-making abilities and overall leadership. You'll undertake a two night expedition with wild camping, demonstrating your ability to plan and execute safe and enjoyable journeys in the mountains. Our experienced and supportive assessors will provide constructive feedback throughout the process, and hopefully help to make the week a positive learning experience

You will have the option to be resident or attend daily.

The pre requirements are;

 

·         You must have completed a Mountain Leader training course

·         You must be familiar with the syllabus

·         You must have Logged on DLog a minimum 40 Quality Mountain Days, planned and executed by yourself in at least 3 different mountain areas of the British Isles

·         You must have logged at least 8 nights camping, including at least 4 nights wild camping

·         You must have physically attended and completed (i.e. not online) a 16 hour first aid course

 

You will be assessed on the following syllabus areas;

·         Hazards and emergency procedures

·         Equipment

·         Walking skills

·         Navigation

·         Expedition

·         Teaching and learning skills

·         Access, conservation and the environment

·         Background knowledge
