Hill Skills

Hill Skills

Gain the confidence to explore the hills with the Mountain Training Hill Skills Course.

This two-day course is the perfect introduction to hillwalking in the UK. Designed for those with little or no previous experience, our expert instructors will guide you through the essential skills needed to enjoy safe and rewarding journeys in upland terrain.

You'll learn how to plan your adventures, navigate effectively with map and compass, choose the right kit, and understand the challenges of mountain weather. We'll cover key safety considerations, including how to deal with emergencies and make  sound decisions in the hills.  With a focus on practical learning, you'll spend time out on the fells, putting your new skills into practice and building your confidence in a supportive environment.  This course is ideal for individuals, groups, and families looking to explore the UK's beautiful countryside with confidence.

This course is not a formal leadership qualification but provides a solid foundation for further development. It's a fantastic stepping stone towards the Hill and Moorland Leader Award or simply a great way to enhance your enjoyment of the hills.

  • The course is designed for adults aged 10 and over.
  • Participants should be reasonably fit and able to walk for up to 6 hours per day.
  • Participants will need to bring their own hiking boots, waterproof clothing, and other essential gear.
